The
accompaniment styles shown here exemplify somse of the popular Latin and Brazilian musical
styles: reggae, beguine, rhumba, mambo, samba/bossa nova. You
will first see some basic patterns typical to each style followed by a sample of music.
Use any chord you like to play each pattern. As you will notice, each pattern is not
entirely new to you. It may be a pattern that combines different patterns you learned. Or
one may be a simple variation of a pattern you saw in Guitar Chords and
Accompaniment. If you have some difficulty playing a pattern, clap the rhythm
first and then play one measure at a time very slowly. Watch out
especially for those examples with ties and accents. At the end, there is a chord
progression for you to practice by filling out each chord form and writing out any pattern
you like.
SAMBA/BOSSA NOVA
Samba and bossa nova are the two most popular and influential music
styles that originate from Brazil. Typically they are played with fingers as shown in the
example. This style has been widely adapted to other music styles such as rock, adult
contemporary pop, and jazz.
